Many historians have traced the origin of birthstones back to biblical times. It is said that Aaron, who was Moses' brother, donned a colorful breastplate that was adorned with 12 jewels. Apparently, these jewels symbolized the 12 tribes of Israel.
In later years, there was a strong belief that the planets had a direct relationship to the time you were born. It was not unusual for people to carry, or wear birthstones to protect against evil spirits and bad health, and to reward the bearer with good luck and prosperity.
In 1912, the Jewelers of America joined together to form a list of what is now known as the modern day birthstone. These birthstones soon became associated to zodiac signs, astrology and our calendar year.
People soon began to believe that these gems contained magical healing properties that seemed to strengthen during their corresponding month. So, if you were to have on a pearl necklace, bracelet or ring during the month of June, the pearl would possess more power.
Birthstones are available in a rainbow of vibrant colors. They come in a variety of glowing jewels and radiant gemstones, and every piece holds a special place in someone's heart, and continues the tradition of myth and folklore.
